Irish citizens can teach in South Korea on an E-2 foreign language instructor visa if they have a bachelor's degree, a clean criminal record check and a sponsoring school. The paperwork takes several weeks, mainly because of the Garda Police Certificate and apostilles. If you are 30 or younger, a working holiday visa is a separate route.
E-2 visa basics
Korean immigration rules for the E-2, as summarised by legal and visa guides, set the following requirements. The Embassy of Korea in Ireland handles applications in person by appointment and lists different documents for private and public school positions.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Nationality | Ireland is among the countries with English as a native language that are eligible. |
| Degree | Bachelor's degree or higher, any subject. Apostilled, with Korean translation where required. |
| Criminal check | From An Garda Síochána, apostilled. Recruiter guidance says it should be issued within six months of your contract start. |
| Medical | A medical examination is required. Ask your employer exactly what it includes. |
| Sponsor | A contract with a lawfully operating institution, such as a private academy or school. |
| Passport | Valid for at least six months beyond the planned stay. |
For a private school, the embassy requires the visa issuance number from Korea's Ministry of Justice, which your employer arranges. For a public school, you provide the original notice of appointment and employment contract. There is no consular fee information here because it changes, so check the embassy page.
Getting the Garda certificate and apostille
An Garda Síochána issues Police Certificates for foreign visas free of charge, and states a processing time of about three weeks. Recruiter guidance says to allow longer, and to get the apostille from the Department of Foreign Affairs, which charges €40 per stamp. Post takes about 5 to 7 working days; Dublin drop-off 3 to 5 working days. Apply before you have a job offer if you can, since the clock on validity is set by the issue date. Read the paperwork checklist.
Length of stay and renewals
Guidance says the initial stay is the contract period plus one month, up to two years, with renewals of up to two years. Extension applications can be filed from four months before your stay ends. Register for your Alien Registration Card within 90 days of arrival, according to a recruiter guide. Your employer should arrange the health check in the first weeks.
Working holiday
The Embassy of Korea in Ireland lists H-1 working holiday visas among those Irish applicants can apply for. A 2020 leaflet gave 18 to 30 as the age range and up to 12 months as the stay. Check the embassy's current rules; a working holiday does not tie you to one school but also gives no sponsorship.
Choosing an employer
- Public school programmes and private academies differ in hours, class size and support.
- Ask for the contract in advance and check pay, housing, severance, hours and overtime.
- Do not pay a placement fee to an individual. See TEFL scams and red flags.
- Compare net pay and housing across offers using the salary guide.
What a typical contract covers
Standard contracts specify teaching hours, class sizes, pay date, housing or a housing allowance, health insurance, annual leave and an end-of-contract payment. The detail varies by school, so compare the actual contract, not the advertisement. Ask if you will be asked to teach extra classes, what the school says about paid leave and how to leave if the placement is not as described. Contact a current teacher and ask how it works. Be cautious with a recruiter who will not share the school's name until you have paid or signed.
A legal summary published in June 2026 reported no new E-2 rule changes that year, and noted a constitutional challenge to the nationality restriction was dismissed on procedural grounds. Treat all guides, including this one, as a starting point and check HiKorea and the embassy.
